'Bournemouth Walking Football Club experience an explosion of interest'
Wonderful 5-1 win for our team away at Eastleigh. Garry Malone (3) and Jeremy Harfield (2) got the goals.
Second month in a row that a Bournemouth Walking Football team has come out on top in the Hampshire League.
Good performances in our two games but we just could not get the ball in the net. A string of fine saves, misdirected shots, and the post denied BWFC 70+ the goals their play deserved.
This picture says it all really - "OK Derek, now what?"
On Sunday a 70+ team travels down to Ottery St Mary in Devon to play for the cup. It promises to be very hot day and Exeter and Troon (Cornwall) await the Strollers. We are fielding a much changed team and it will be interesting to see how it gels. In a practice game today the team lost 0 - 1 to the BWFC 60+ and it's clear that much better performances are required if they are to do well at Ottery.
Eastleigh 3 - 0 Bournemouth
Neither side dominated possession and there was a lot of quick precise passing from both sides. Eastleigh had most possession in their opponents half but Bournemouth looked comfortable despite losing their most influential midfielder after only a few minutes, and repelled the attacks. However two errors right on the edge of the penalty area before half time cost them dearly, and the half ended 2 - 0. In the second half Bournemouth pressed forward more and were beginning to dominate but were undone by a sharp Eastleigh move on the left of the penalty area.
Eastleigh fully deserved the victory but the six men of Bournemouth can feel proud of their efforts against a much more experienced cup team and can feel that the 0 - 3 scoreline does not properly reflect how close the game was.
BWFC played in their first WFA National Cup game today and the 50+ team had a 5 - 2 victory over Gosport.
Good news that there may still be a SW Super Cup for the over 70's which is likely to be held in Exeter in late June. The WFA had approved a final between Bournemouth Strollers and Troon (Cornwall) but there is now a possibility of other teams joining for a one day knockout competition. More news to follow.
Today we have two teams going to the first games of this year's Hampshire league which are being played at Stoneham Lane in Southampton.
Although the age group is set at 50+ it seemed last year that the majority of players were in reality 60+. Despite that the games were fast and the schedule relentless. Let's hope that the lads do as well as last year.
